May 11th 2008 | Why playing the guitar means everything
Playing the guitar means forming a band with your mates and having your own thing, and it means struggle, on your own with sore fingers for two weeks, or with your band in little pubs, clubs and vans around the country until something happens or you give up. Playing the guitar means meeting new people and making new friends, it means staying up late, and showing off, and it means being able to express yourself, often at very high volume. Playing the guitar means fixating on a particular model or make you dream about getting but can't afford. It means dressing up, and impressing some girls and impressing some boys. It means having a laugh, or disagreements over bits of songs or the direction of the group or the cover of the record, and it means feeling so happy about a riff or a song that you want the world to hear it that minute.
Playing the guitar means never being alone with nothing to do. It means strumming for fun, or going further and further into amazing territory and a lifetime of discovery and discipline, or just taking up a hobby that gives you a bit pleasure and a sense of achievement. Playing the guitar means everything. Know what I mean?

October 16th 2007 | Pete Doherty and Paul McCartney on Johnny and The Smiths
Sir Paul: Yeah, I like them. Linda was into Morrissey; they wrote to each other a lot. Big fans. I played with Johnny [Marr] a bit. It was original.
Pete: Falling guitar lines where there's no chords and you spend three weeks trying to work out what he's really playing.
Sir Paul: You could tell it was Morrissey. It was like his paint palette ... [Pete starts singing the Smiths song 'Still Ill'.]
Sir Paul: [appreciatively] Have you ever covered that?
Pete: No.
Sir Paul: It's obviously a song you love. It's in your blood.
Pete: I got it as a seven-inch from a second-hand shop in Nuneaton. It was on the wall, and I thought I was being clever, 'cause I nicked it - but I'd only nicked the sleeve. So I had to go back and pay for the record. As soon as the guitar started, I didn't even listen to the rest of it, I just wanted to play it again and again. I didn't want it to end ...
October 15th 2007 | Johnny and Isaac interviewed by Spinner + online session
Johnny and Isaac were interviewed by Spinner for their web site, to accompany the excellent Modest Mouse online session. As well as the interviews the band perform four songs : "Broke", "Little Motel", "We've Got Everything" and "The View" AOL: Johnny, how did you come to get involved with the band?
Johnny Marr: I got involved when Isaac called me up and asked me whether I'd be interested in helping the band write their next record, and it kind of just came completely out of the blue, really. I was a fan of Modest Mouse, and I just kind of figured, well, let's just come do ten days of playing together and see what happens. So I went over to Portland, and Isaac and I started playing very fiercely at each other through very loud amplifiers on the first night, and we wrote a couple of songs. So the next day I woke up and sort of realized that we had written a couple of singles almost, so I thought, "That's a pretty interesting start." Then I went back the U.K. for a few weeks and listened to what we were doing and thought about it, and I was quite excited to get back. Two years later, I'm still there.
AOL: The new stuff sounds amazing, so obviously it worked out really well.
Johnny Marr: Thanks, we're really happy with it, you know? A lot of people have asked me about the process, and I don't really quite know what people expect -- maybe that we sit with managers around an oval table and discuss career trajectory or something like that. But if you get involved in an adventure, and then you work 14-, 15-hour days with a bunch of people day in, day out, it's actually weirder to leave than it is to just stay, because friendships are developed and loyalties and things like that. They said. "Just come and write see what happens, and if you're interested in making the record with us, that'd be really great. If not, someone else can play your parts -- and you might even want to come on tour and stuff." So we were still feeling it out, and in many ways, the way I ended up playing with the band was really like the way 14- and 15-year-olds form bands, which is that you get together, and you see if you like each other, and you see if you have a good laugh and make up some songs, and then you hope it goes well, and then you try and do it again, and you just kind of go, "All right, this is OK." It feels like some part of my lifeline in a way, so it's all good ? it's like a family, you know, brotherhood.
AOL: What was the first song you learned on guitar, and how did you learn it?
Johnny Marr: The first song I could ever play entirely was 'Life's a Gas,' by T-Rex. It was the B side of a single I bought, which was 'Jeepster,' and luckily for me the first three chords [I knew] were incorporated in the song minus one tricky one that I use to just kind of cough over. I love the sound of the playing of the guitar, so I never had to be prodded to practice. Man, I had to be told to stop practicing, really, 'cause my little brother was in the bed next to me and I was playing the guitar pretty loud.
AOL: The word "indie" gets thrown around a lot. Is there anything it means specifically to you, or do you think it's just kind of a throwaway term?
Johnny Marr: I think now it means what "rock" use to mean, like, twenty years ago. I can't not think of indie really originating from the sound of Rough Trade Records, and Factory Records in Manchester, and Postcard Records in Scotland, and possibly Mute in London. Those four labels were putting out independent music with a sort of specific musical aesthetic in Britain, and I think the Smiths became [indie's] most high-profile guitar group. I see it as an anemic, skinny, little term that now, twenty years later, has become sort of, you know ? overfed. It's got a big BMW now and a credit card when it used to just have a little push-bike and eat muesli.
AOL: Talking about the Smiths, Morrissey has decided that he does not want to do a reunion. How do you feel about doing a reunion yourself?
Johnny Marr: I'm in agreement with him. I don't think any of us want to do it, really. It's a question that gets thrown out at you like sort of a journalist Tourette's. I think the question has become more about the question than about the music, actually.
October 9th 2007 | Johnny honoured with Q Lifetime Achievement award
Since The Smiths he has drawn up his own map and kept moving, always moving, always exploring, trying to do something different and something new, a proper musician. He's collaborated with the likes of Talking Heads, The The, Pet Shop Boys, Bert Jansch, Billy Bragg and Kirsty MacColl. He co-formed Electronic and The Healers and now he finds himself as the guitarist with mighty US band Modest Mouse.
The man is an incredible songwriter, a shit-hot guitarist, but above all he's an enlightened and wonderful human being"
October 2nd 2007 | Johnny elected Honorary Patron of Trinity college Dublin University Philosophical Society

Trinity college campus really is a special place, right in Dublin city centre at the top of Grafton St. The ceremony took place in the wonderful old debating hall, it was the hottest ticket in Dublin that night. We'll have some pictures soon.
Johnny would like to thank the Students of Trinity College Dublin for this recognition.
Thanks to Ruth Faller , Sinead Finegan, Barry Devlin , Brendan Curran, Joe McCaffrey and Stuart Clark for their welcome, warmth, good humour and hospitality, we spent twenty four hours with smiles on our faces. It truly was a memorable experience that we hope to further in the future.

July 11th 2008 | Johnny 'Icing on the cake' at Crowded House Liverpool Echo Arena show
Here's a nice write-up of the show in the Liverpool Echo.
Modest Mouse followed their gig at Madison Square Garden with a gig at Brooklyn's 550-capacity Music Hall of Williamsburg, that began (June 20) at 2:30 a.m. The show had only been announced earlier that day, and tickets sold out in minutes. They played 14 songs filled with extended instrumental solos that really worked for the early morning fans.
"This tour we're on now is a lot of fun. We worked up some new versions of some old songs ; "Dance Hall", "Truckers Atlas", Teeth Like God's Shoeshine" and some others that we throw in when we feel like it. The dates with REM have been fun too. I've been playing with them in their encore and it goes down well. Peter (Buck) and I get something good going with the two Rickenbackers, I always really liked "Fall On Me". We've played in storms, had lightening bolts hit the stadium, and are about to go to Madison Square Garden; It's a good time."
Saturday 14th June, Jones Beach Theatre, Wantagh, New York. A lightning strike at New York's Jones Beach prompted the temporary evacuation of thousands of concert-goers. The theater was evacuated for nearly two hours during the show by Modest Mouse, R.E.M. and The National. During Modest Mouse¹s set, lightning struck the amphitheater, causing sparks to fly, and then an announcement was made for fans to leave their seats. The area around the amphitheater was flooded with three inches of standing water.
Here's a YouTube film of Johnny playing "Fall on Me" with R.E.M. at the Molsen Amphitheater in Toronto on Sunday June 8.
Johnny played "Fall On Me" with REM again in Chicago on June 6th. It was a big moment in the set and sounded just brilliant. Below are some pics from Johnny and Peter Buck on two Rickenbackers.

Johnny answered this question for the Guardian."Playing the guitar means always having something cool to do. It means having ambitions to be a rock star, escaping your life, or just learning to play your favourite songs. It means having fun - because you really don't need to be able to read music or have lessons to do it pretty well - and it means buying a strap and making sure it's the correct length so it looks right and feels comfortable. But mainly so it looks right.
The Guardian Saturday May 10, 2008

Tour with REM

The idea to collaborate on a single was first arose when Johnny met Gary Jarman at a barbecue in Portland in 2007. Since then they have been waiting for a convenient time in their schedules to do it. That came this week when they got together in a Stockport studio.
Late May and early June Modest Mouse will tour America with REM, we will have some more details soon.

It has been a busy month for Johnny he has collected a total of 3 Honours in as
many weeks. This month has seen him honoured by Trinity College, Dublin,
Salford University and Q magazine. The appointment ceremony was held at Salford
University and there were welcoming speeches from University Vice Chancellor
Professor Michael Harloe, Registrar Doctor Adrian Graves, Head of School
Professor John Mundy and Johnny gave a well received acceptance speech. The
ceremony was attended by students and lecturers from the University and students
from Hope High School.
Johnny also said "Salford University is offering some
fantastic opportunities to students in music. It's an honour to be appointed a
Professor and I’m excited at the prospect of being able to make a
contribution."
In the Observer Music Monthly Pete Doherty and Paul McCartney praised
Johnny's guitar playing. The Babyshambles frontman was interviewing Paul
McCartney and asked him about Johnny's playing. Paul's comment about playing
with Johnny refers to the rehearsals they had together in London in 1987.
They also played together at The Albert Hall when Johnny played with
McCartney on 'Let It Be'.
Pete: What about the Smiths?
"I see 'indie' as an anemic, skinny, little term that has become overfed." - Johnny?
On Monday October 8th Johnny was honoured with one of Britain's most prestigious music awards, the Q Lifetime Achievement award ! The annual ceremony was held at the Grosvenor House hotel in London's Park Lane and hosted by Jonathon Ross. Johnny was presented with the award by Radiohead's Ed O'Brien who said:"I am so honoured to present this award to a man who turned my musical world upside down through his song writing and guitar playing with his first band The Smiths. He inspired a legion of us to start playing guitar, form bands, begin saving up for Rickenbackers and dream of escaping our surroundings.
Other winners included:
After the awards Johnny said "It's very nice to get recognition for what you've done. I have spent most of my life as a musician. It's cool."

Johnny has been elected Honorary Patron of Trinity college Dublin University Philosophical Society, which was founded in 1684 by William Molyneaux and Sir William Petty and has consistently been a forum for the radical debate of issues that both affect and reflect society.

In the packed hall there was a really special buzz of anticipation before Johnny arrived, when he did everyone stood up and the place erupted. Johnny was interviewed on the stage by Stuart Clark from Hot Press, which was informative and very entertaining, he then answered questions from the students in the audience. After the questions Ruth Faller the ever smiling Phil president presented Johnny with the Honorary Patronage medal of the society and the room stood up and erupted again.
Johnny has lent his full support to Radiohead's radical way of releasing their album "In Rainbows". Johnny told the BBC:"I think it's a really fantastic idea because it puts the responsibility back on people's own consciences and deals with people as
grown ups. It's not hiding behind any corporate nonsense, it's just saying 'this is the way it is, let's get on with it'. Everyone knows you can get your music for free, so let's see if you really want to show the band your appreciation."

The school has just under a hundred pupils aged between two and eleven years of age and provides specialist teaching and provisions for a range of conditions, these include autistic spectrum disorder and a variety of physical disabilities. The very specific needs of the children require smaller class groups and a high level of specialist staffing. Each child has an individual program including activities that are designed to encourage them to make progress across all areas and to achieve their full potential. The Pictor School has a range of specialist equipment and resources but currently requires additional funds to develop the outdoor educational and play facilities for the pupils.
From time to time there are reviews that jump out, here's one published by Channel 4 !
Modest Mouse 'Dashboard' (Epic)
May 31st 2007 | Ed O'Brien (Radiohead) on The Smiths' "This Charming Man"
God bless Johnny Marr. He makes everything splendid, doesn't he? He's been busy making everything splendid for Modest Mouse recently, and, for those of you still holding a torch for The Smiths, you'll get a warm glow when you hear 'Dashboard'. It's nothing like The Smiths, of course, it's just no one plays jangly guitar like Johnny. Although, being Modest Mouse, its appeal is far more complex than that. It's a thing of beauty, brimming with brass, strings and velvety vocals to die for. We like.
In the June issue of Mojo Ed O'Brien from Radiohead says this about The Smiths' "This Charming Man" single released on Rough Trade in 1983:
Never mind the gladioli, here's the blueprint for indie jangle.
May 31st 2007 | Johnny's take on '100 records that changed the world'
"I was drawn into doing what I do because of what Johnny Marr wrote and played. I was about 16, your hormones are raging, you're so sensitive to everything, particularly music, and this band arrives like nothing you've ever heard before. It emotionally pinned and uplifted me, and I knew this thing with six strings was something that could create this effect. What struck me first was the guitar melody: it's one of the defining pop-rock intros. It's one of those songs you go back to when you've had enough of music. It's joyful and uplifting, it drives and resonates. It was the template for indie pop, for good and bad. For a while, you had that goth thing coming out of New Romantiscism, and U2, who a lot of people were sniffy about, but The Smiths unified fans of both camps; they had a real pop sensibility, they looked fucking cool, and Marr had a Rickenbacker, continuing that British tradition of guitarists from Townshend and The Beatles to Weller."
Without this... the '80s rediscovery of the '60s, Stone Roses, Oasis, Shins.
Here's what Johnny had to say about T.Rex' "Jeepster' single in Mojo's '1àà
records that changed the world' series :
"I'd bought Jeepster and decided this was the band for me. I absolutely loved it. Get it On was a band having their moment - it has a sound you can almost touch, as Jim Lea from Slade once said. Seeing T.Rex on Top Of The Pops - they were doing Metal Guru - was actually a life-changing moment for me. For the first time I heard a sound that was simultaneously mystical and otherworldly but strikingly familiar also. The whole sound of it was like a massive attack on all of the senses. It's a very interesting place because it isn't just sweetness and light, it's intense and fairly sexual and mysterious and can be dangerous. I'm probably describing a lot of people's experience of most aspects of rock'n'roll-danger, sexuality, mystery, almost religion really."
May 30th 2007 | Mojo interview available
Without this, no... glam explosion, Smiths, Oasis.

November 27th 2006 | A word from Johnny for the fans
"Well here we are, thanks for visiting the site.
I wanted do a quick something and say hello to everyone especially as so much
has been happening recently. The Modest Mouse tour has started at a furious pace
and I've been really happy with the shows.
We've been playing some new songs from the forthcoming album that I've written
and recorded with the band and also a nice mixture of the fans older favourites
too. It's been an interesting experience to meet the fans and get their reaction
to my playing and sound in the band and also a nice surprise and reminder that a
lot of them are into The Smiths too. The New York
gigs have been especially good as we've started to click with the old stuff in a
big way.
It seems that my collaboration with Modest Mouse has caused some raised eyebrows
in some circles. All I can say is that the songs and shows explain very easily
what it's all about. When Isaac first approached me to work with the band on the
new record I went into it with a sense of intrigue and experimentation, as it
turned out we wrote some great songs straight away and took off like a rocket.
We recorded nineteen songs in Portland and cut them all for possible inclusion
on the record, and there's still stuff that we didn't have time to finish. I
feel that live we're doing something powerful and pretty original, and the new
line up of the band as a six piece with two drummers is very exciting. I don't
want to analyze what were doing,
it's just great, and I think we've made a special record too.
So there's the info in case you were interested, it's all very nice. The site is
undergoing an imminent new re-haul and I'm excited about the hpossibilities that
this brings. There will be updates of news and as things are happening so feel
welcome to check us out.
A lot of people are wanting to know what's happening with the new Healers
material that I played at the Manchester show earlier this year. I'm hoping to
have the new Healers record out as soon as I can, when I get a break from the
Modest Mouse tour. We've got a lot of songs recorded and I'm excited for
everyone to hear it.
There we go. It's nice to be in touch, and seeing some of you at these current
dates too.
Best to all....
Johnny"

Says Johnny : " David asked me if I could help him out on it and I saw the

February 08th 2006 | Manchester Versus Cancer concert report
Johnny and The Healers played a historic set at the Manchester Versus Cancer
concert at the MEN Arena (28th January). Johnny also played three songs with
Doves, and the finale with Doves and Shaun Rider.
With The Healers he played :
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
Denial Denial
Sparks Of Life
Down On The Corner
and
How Soon Is Now
Johnny was introduced by Damon Gough aka Badly Drawn Boy and came on to an
ecstatic reception. The audience were ecstatic when the band launched into The
Smiths classic "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" and the twelve thousand
strong crowd sung every word with him. The next two songs, "Denial Denial" and
"Sparks Of Life" were from the new album rumored to be called "Reign Down The
New Days" and went down a storm.
After "Sparks Of Life" Johnny addressed the crowd : "Since I agreed to do this
gig I've had people write to me, send me e-mails and contact the website, and
stop me in the street too to thank me because everyone and every family has had
someone somewhere suffer with the disease of cancer. I'd like to pass on their
thanks to you because you are the ones who should be thanked. We're just
musicians playing music and trying to entertain, and this could only happen in
on place, one city,my home town, here".
As the crowd cheered with recognition Johnny rang out on his Rickenbacker a tune
and sang along : "Manchester la la la la" and then segued into a rousing version
of the US single "Down On The Corner" from the Boomslang album. After
introducing The Healers (James Doviak on guitar, Iwan Gronow on Bass Guitar and
David Tolan on Drums) Johnny stepped up again to make another introduction: "I'd
like to introduce someone I first played with in school in 1978, and last played
with in London in 1987. It's been too long. We've done some good things
together, and some not so good things, and some great things, and tonight seems
like a good time to play together again.
Please welcome Andy Rourke". When the opening riff off "How Soon Is Now" throbbed through the Manchester Arena everyone in the place went
bezerk. From
then on the night took off into history....
Johnny : "It was a great show and a great night. I wasn't sure how everything
was going to go because the event was pretty ambitious but all the bands are
very together and experienced, so it all clicked. There was an amazing
atmosphere in the place, backstage too. It was good to play in Manchester again,
we surprised everyone with the Smiths songs and our new songs went down really
well. It was beautiful really."
Johnny came onstage in Doves set with Bernard Sumner and played Lou Reed's "Viscious"
followed by the Motown classic "There's A Ghost In My House". He stayed on when
Bernard left and Elbow's Guy Garvey came on for an epic version of Doves' hit
"There Goes The Fear".
After New Order ended the show with their Joy Division set Johnny took the stage
again for a finale with Doves, Bernard and Hooky, Andy Rourke, and Happy
Mondays' Shaun and Bez for a roof raising "Wrote For Luck".
All in all a truly historic night; all the Manchester legends onstage together
for one night. Johnny debuting songs from the next Healers album, playing "There
Is A Light" and "How Soon Is Now", and re-uniting with Andy Rourke and Bernard
Sumner too.

Gainsbourg recorded a lot of his classic material. The album is produced by
Gonzales.
Johnny: "I enjoyed working with Gonzales and the engineer Renaud Letang. I like

Jane Birkin has a very cool voice and her approach to the songs is really
interesting.

It will be named after a track by the band and furthermore feature 20 Smiths songs arranged for a string quartet, "with a percussive lute accompaniment, and sung live by a cast of six" to quote the producer Michael Brazier.

TRIBUTE SONG FOR JOHN PEEL DURING GIG WITH FINN BROTHERS
Johnny played with Neil and Tim Finn at The Liverpool Empire on Wed 26th October and in Nottingham on Thrs 27th Oct. The songs performed in Liverpool by Johnny were "Four Seasons In One Day", "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out", "Ferry Across The
Mersey" and he sang and played "Teenage Kicks" as well. He did the same in Nottingham and I also did "Weather With You" too over there. Johnny: "We were about to dedicate Ferry Across The Mersey to John Peel because we had heard about his passing that day, and a few people in the audience started shouting out for "Teenage Kicks". I just went into it, never played it before in my life. It was a good moment".
TRACK FOR CHANNEL 4's SHAMELESS
Johnny has also done a track for the Christmas episode of Channel 4's "Shameless" program. The show will be broadcast on the 28th of December. October 27th | BROADCASTING LEGEND JOHN PEEL DIES
John Peel, the legendary Radio 1 and Radio 4 presenter, has died suddenly from a heart attack on holiday in Peru on Monday October 25th. It was BBC1 who broke the sad news that Peel died the day before in the ancient Inca city of
Cuzco. Peel started his Radio 1 career since its launch in 1967. One of the bands Peel championed was The Smiths. In a reaction Johnny Marr says: "John Peel was very important to The Smiths, particularly in the early days. He was the first person to play our single and we would often try out new songs when we did sessions for his show. He knew what was going on and went out of his way to promote good music and the underdog. He was a nice guy too." Our thoughts are with his family.
June 25th | JMARR.COM TO BE REDESIGNED
In the following weeks we will start work on a brand new website that will
hold member only sections, forums and so on. For the moment being we will
continue to inform you through this website. A date for the launch of the new
website will be given in due time. For the moment, enjoy the Summer of 2004!
May 13th | ADVERT IN MOJO MAGAZINE FOR QW MISLEADING
The ad claims that Johnny Marr would have said in the interview that the Smiths got back together. In a reaction Johnny Marr says: "The advertisement for the Q Smiths supplement was misleading and untrue. In my interview I didn't say or even imply that the four members of The Smiths reconvened. I said that Morrissey and myself got together socially a couple of times in the nineties. My explanation to David Sheppard was very clear and how this information turned into a scoop about a Smiths reformation is beyond me."
May 12th | ZAK PLAYING WITH OASIS
In a reaction on the news that Zak has joined Oasis live, Johnny says: "It was always my plan that I demo the new Healers songs on my own. Zak is doing Who gigs and it's no big deal, or surprise that he's going on the road with Oasis."
A few new interviews
Johnny Marr has done a few new interviews recently about The Smiths (Word Magazine, Q and the revised version of the book "Songs That Saved Your Life"). Johnny: "Sometimes these things have to be addressed as we've all seen so much
mis/dis- information about the band. I'd rather stay in the present, and I don't have a problem with fan's Q & A's on the site, but sometimes these things have to be done. I'm reserving my judgment about it all until after they've been printed"
January 1st | JOHNNY MARR and the online team wish you a happy new year!
